CAREER IN FASHION BEYOND APPARELS

When we talk about fashion, the first thing that comes up in our mind is apparel. We associate fashion with garments the most. Garments are the clothes worn on the body made of textiles or fabrics. But fashion is not only about the clothes but it is also about the existence of human beings. We are surrounded by fashion in many aspects such as lifestyle products, home textiles etc.

The Faculty of Fashion & Design, SGT University and Wazir Advisors took an initiative to throw a light on the Careers in Fashion beyond Apparels. A webinar was hosted by Faculty of Fashion & Design where the faculty member, Mr. Deepak Sharma, interacted with Mr. Varun Vaid, Associate Director at Wazir Advsiors; along with Mr. Rishi Kant Sharma, Former Merchandising Head at Williams Sonoma. Both the experts are into the industry for almost two decades now. Mr. Varun Vaid has worked in production and marketing domains in past and now is an Associate Director with Wazir Advisors, which is India’s leading textile and retail consulting firm. Mr. Rishi Kant Sharma has served as a merchandiser in home furnishing industries and he now owns a buying agency to source & export Textiles & Handicraft products to various countries. He also supports SGT University’s Fashion faculty students with industry outreach programs.

The webinar was hosted on 7th May, 2020 from 4 pm to 5 pm and it was attended by many fashion enthusiastic persons who wants to pursue a career in the fashion field. The experts talked about the careers in fashion beyond apparels such as accessories, handicrafts, home textiles and many more. The handicrafts of India have attracted the consumers all over the world. Similarly, the industry of Indian textiles is famous throughout the world. The textile manufacturers of India always have an eye for innovation and their products suit the trendy markets. Mr. Varun discussed about the condition of retail markets in the home textiles industries. He states that to keep a pace with the modernized generation, the textiles makers always seek the fresh and budding design professionals.

The conclusion of the session was that there’s lot more to the fashion other than apparels. It was a valuable and knowledgeable experience for the students and others who want to pursue a career in fashion.
